I am Judas and Peter

The Gospel today takes place at the Last Supper. Jesus foretells the betrayal of Judas and the three-time denial of Peter. There is often a physical response to hearing this. These men have walked with Jesus. They know Him, or at least it seems. They have seen the way He loves, watched Him perform miracles. listened to His mercy. Yet, they still betray and deny.

Then, I remember my need to go to Confession on a regular basis. I remind myself, I am Judas and Peter. I have watched the way He loves through so many amazing priests, beautiful friends, sweet family members, and wonderful strangers. Every Sunday and many times during the week, I participate in the Mass. The miracle of bread to Body is present every single time. I have heard my sins absolved in the confessional.

I know Jesus, but I am still Judas and Peter. But how did each man respond to their sin? Judas hung himself and Peter received His mercy. I desire to be like Peter. Like Peter, I want to tell Jesus I won't deny Him, BUT I also want to recognize that when I do, His mercy is new each morning (Lam. 3:23).

As we enter more fully into Holy Week, let's put ourselves in the story. The Last Supper, Passion, Crucifixion, and Resurrection are also our story. Jesus enters into our humanity so that we can enter into the divine! Let us receive His love and mercy this week. Then, let us become love and mercy for others!
